Indicators
The numbers the promises are judged against: official statistics from Defra, Natural England, the Forestry Commission and others, entered with a source for every value, plus one figure derived directly from the land ledger.
How to read these
Each indicator is the published measure the government itself uses, or the nearest official statistic where none exists. A promise linked to an indicator is judged by drawing a straight line from its baseline to its target and asking whether the latest value is on that line. Dashed lines on the charts show that path.
Green sparklines move in the right direction for the promise; terracotta ones move the wrong way. The methodology lists every source and the thresholds used.
